HISTORY

History comes alive at Wallace Community College Selma (WCCS)!  Located in historic Selma, Alabama, WCCS offers several history courses that will help you to become well-rounded, global citizens.

Selma played a decisive role in the American Civil War as one of the arsenals for the Confederate States of America and as the site of one of Alabama’s major Civil War battles.  One hundred years later, Selma became known internationally as the battleground for African-American voting rights during the modern Civil Rights Movement.  Local activists risked their lives at the base of the Edmund Pettus Bridge to protest the denial of the right to vote, one of America’s most sacred privileges, to African-Americans.

WCCS history courses offer students the opportunity to complete their requirements for the general education curriculum, which means that these credits can transfer to any four-year college or university in the state of Alabama.

Students may take Western Civilization I and II (HIS 101 and 102), which explore the history of Western Europe from ancient times to the present.  These courses also explore the influence of Western European culture on the entire world.

Students may also take United States history I and II (HIS 201 and 202), which explore the history of the United States from the exploration and colonization of North America to the twenty-first century.
