SPH 106: Fundamentals of Oral Communication

Course Description:

This is a performance course that includes the principles of human communication: intrapersonal, interpersonal, and public. It surveys current communication theory and provides practical application.

Course Competencies:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of intrapersonal and interpersonal communication
  • Organize an effective speech which includes an introduction, body, and conclusion
  • Demonstrate appropriate delivery skills while presenting a timed speech

SPH 107: Fundamentals of Public Speaking

Course Description:

This course explores principles of audience and environment analysis as well as the actual planning, rehearsing, and presenting of formal speeches to specific audiences. Historical foundations, communication theories, and student performances are emphasized

Course Competencies:

  • Construct (research, organize, outline) speeches for diverse audiences
  • Deliver informative, persuasive, and special occasion speeches
  • Develop listening and analytical skills
  • Develop strategies to manage performance anxiety
