Wallace Community College Selma Celebrates Student Excellence at 2025 Honors Ceremony
Selma, AL – Wallace Community College Selma (WCCS) held its annual Honors Ceremony on Thursday, April 10, 2025, recognizing its students' outstanding academic achievements, leadership, and service. The event took place on campus and was led by WCCS President Dr. James M. Mitchell, who delivered inspiring remarks in one of his final official ceremonies before his retirement later this year.
The evening celebrated students earning Academic Excellence and Academic Achievement honors, the induction of new Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) members, and the recognition of the Most Outstanding Academic Athletes. More than 150 students were honored for their exceptional performance across various disciplines.
“Our students continue to raise the bar,” said Dr. Mitchell. “Tonight, we recognize their academic commitment, resilience, leadership, and dedication to their communities. It’s a joy to celebrate their accomplishments.”
To achieve Academic Excellence, students must have earned a 4.0 GPA while completing at least 12 credit hours per semester or 24 credit hours as part-time students. Moreover, the All-Alabama Team Members, Chandler Tyler and Nolan Fairley, were honored for their exceptional academic contributions and received a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of their accomplishments.
The Most Outstanding Academic Athlete awards were presented to Ta’Myla Allen and Kerry Vance, acknowledging their academic excellence and commitment to athletic pursuits, displaying exceptional sportsmanship and character.
Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges. To be inducted, students must have earned at least 30 credit hours, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher, demonstrate good moral character, and exhibit leadership and service in their school and community. The event concluded with a reception for honorees and guests in the FA-3 room behind the stage. Dean of Students Dr. Donitha Griffin, along with faculty and staff, helped organize and host the program. Special recognition was also given to instructors, sponsors, and directors who contributed to the students' success.
