Wallace Community College Selma President Dr. James M. Mitchell Announces Retirement
Selma, AL – After more than two decades of dedicated leadership and service, Dr. James M. Mitchell, President of Wallace Community College Selma (WCCS), has announced his retirement effective September 1, 2025.
Dr. Mitchell shared the news in a heartfelt message to faculty and staff, reflecting on his years at the institution's helm. "With a mixture of gratitude, pride, and a touch of melancholy, I announce my retirement as President of Wallace Community College Selma," he wrote. "This decision has not been made lightly, as my time here has been one of the most rewarding chapters of my life."
Under Dr. Mitchell’s visionary leadership, WCCS has seen remarkable progress in expanding academic and technical programs, improving campus infrastructure, and fostering strong community partnerships. His focus on inclusivity, student success, and innovation has shaped a vibrant learning environment and helped transform the lives of countless students across the Black Belt region.
“Together, we have navigated challenges, celebrated success, and fostered an environment of learning, inclusivity, and innovation,” Dr. Mitchell noted. “The dedication and passion of our students, faculty, and staff have been the driving force behind our achievements.”
Dr. Mitchell leaves a legacy of growth, resilience, and commitment to access and opportunity in higher education. Though stepping down from his official capacity, he assured the WCCS community that he will strongly support the college. “While this marks the end of my tenure as President, it is not a farewell,” he said. “I will always remain a part of the Wallace Community College Selma family.”
A celebration of Dr. Mitchell’s extraordinary tenure and contributions will be held later this year. Details will be shared with the community in the coming weeks.
